Glamping: What Does The Future Hold?

The number of people opting for ‘glamping’ (aka glamourous camping) holidays in the UK has continued to rise year-on-year, with people seeking an outdoor adventure with some home comforts thrown in!

Forget midnight treks to the communal toilet block in your wellies, or shivering yourself to sleep under four duvets’, glamping celebrates the great outdoors whilst providing a comfortable bed, heating and often en-suite facilities too. What’s not to love?

Self-catering sites have embraced this trend and Pods, Yurts and Tipi’s have continued to pop up across the country as demand from guests has grown. So, we caught up with the owner of 4 Winds: Lakeland Tipis, Lee Duckworth, to find out how this relatively new accommodation type has transformed his business, and what he thinks the future holds for glamping holidays in the UK.

Lee said:

The inspiration to invest in Tipi holidays came from a holiday in Cornwall in 2004. We came home from a fantastic stay in Tipi’s and couldn’t find any glamping facilities in our area so we invested in a 5 Tipi’s. Just a year later we were open for business!

Set in several locations in the South Lakes, Lee doesn’t just offer the Tipi’s but everything the guests need for a comfortable stay. It is this combination of comfort outdoors that sets glamping apart from the more traditional camping experiences, but Lee believes both accommodation types remain ever more popular in the UK.

Lee added:

Glamping holidays are on the increase in the UK and I think the industry will continue to grow over the next few years. Tipis in particular are still very unique and offer an alternative camping experience.

I’m sure in years to come new accommodation will be available, offering unique guest experiences, but for now we see the demand for the Tipis increase each year.

That said, both traditional and alternative camping experiences seem to be getting more popular each year.

According to market researcher, Mintel, over 17 million camping and caravanning trips were taken by UK adults in 2016, a figure which it says is expected to rise to over 21 million in 2020.

With UK staycations on the rise it’s not just customer satisfaction that’s driving campsites to expand in to glamping, its proving to be a profitable sector for site owners. For many, being able to charge higher rates per night allows them to keep their site open all year round, and to retain their staff too, saving on time and resource each season.
