Effective online marketing is a crucial element of the mix for any modern B&B business, and maintaining a good quality blog contributes a huge amount to your overall success. 

So when it comes to blogging, what are the secrets to getting it right? Here are five top tips from the marketing team here at Out of Eden: 

Get in the right frame of mind 

If you regard writing a regular blog as a bit of a chore, you can be sure that your readers will sense that negativity. So change your attitude to blog writing. 

Get excited about something, sit down at your computer, and fill your page with enthusiasm about it. Enthusiasm is contagious, and it’ll shine through. 

Talk about the location 

As every estate agent will tell you, it’s all about location, location, location. Guests generally choose the area they want to visit before picking the accommodation, so make sure your audience knows what a brilliant part of the world you’re in. 

Talk about local attractions and visitor experiences, the quality of shops on the high street, the amazing countryside, the proximity to the university; whatever it is that makes your location attractive, tell them about it.

Show as well as tell 

Blogs are about words, but remember that a picture is worth a thousand words. A blog which is just dry text won’t get read, so use plenty of quality pictures to keep it interesting and make it real. If your garden is beautiful, show them how beautiful. 

If you’re proud of the newly decorated bedrooms, show off the results. If your full English is the best around, a close up photo will have them literally drooling. 

Make it personal 

One of the best things about a B&B is often the friendly hospitality of the hosts. So don’t be shy or modest, tell them all about who you are and what makes you tick. Tell them about the things you’re always happy to help with, like advice on where to eat, or the best local walking routes, or what’s on at the theatre and cinema. 

And don’t hold back with talking up your establishment either. The free parking you have, the lovely patio seating area, the cosy fireplace, the complimentary newspapers, the luxurious guest toiletries – whatever you offer your guests, these little touches all need talking about. 

Target your audience 

Think about what type of guests you attract or want to attract, and write your blog for them. If a large proportion are business travellers, then you need to be talking about the free wifi, free parking, and the excellent mobile phone reception. 

If your guests are outdoors lovers, then emphasise how close you are to the open countryside, feature great walks nearby, tell them all about the boat trips on the lake. Whatever your main market is, make sure your blog tells people exactly why you’re the best place for them to stay. 

Follow these five tips, and you’ll find that blog writing not only becomes a pleasure; but also increases your audience engagement and, ultimately, your bookings!
